got a very useful information from this forum

I am Proud to be his student Mr. George .... thank god

The subject of the below is one of our faculty in Anna University

The 45-year-old PhD student from Chennai’s prestigious Anna University enjoys the rare privilege of having the country’s first citizen as his doctoral guide. And this is one assignment that the President, weighed down by endless State responsibilities, looks forward to.About four to five times a year, Dr Kalam steals a few hours, mostly late into the night, away from the hustle and bustle of Indian polity, to guide him.Fr George has been pursuing a subject which even fits the public image of the President—enhancing capabilities of the brain in mentally challenged children. “This we want to achieve by stimulation of the brain,” he said. And according to experts in the PhD committee, the study is showing great results in animal trials.“It is progressing very well. And the President’s knowledge in the field is great,” said Dr T R Raju, Dean at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, who is part of the PhD committee reviewing the research.“Nobody can have a better guide. Not only is he available all the time, he also knows what is going on in the field. There is no constraint of time or accessibility,’’ said Fr George. “The research is taking time because of my own limitations.” Dr Kalam takes his responsibilities as a guide rather seriously. In fact, when the NDA leaders sounded him out about the prestigious assignment in early 2002, one of the primary concerns of this former Professor of Technology and Societal Transformation at Anna University was: “Will I be permitted to continue guiding my student?”Students proudly claim that Dr Kalam agreed to be the President only after he got an assurance from the then Vice-Chancellor that the varsity’s rules permitted him to continue as a guide. The person most thrilled, of course, is Fr George. “I have no words to describe how I felt when Dr Kalam said he was ‘tempted’ to be my guide,” he said, excitedly preparing for his coming visit. “The past few months were very cold in Delhi. So, I postponed my next visit to April.”Their last meeting was in Chennai’s Raj Bhavan on November 31, 2005.“Our discussions sometimes go on late into the night. Even as he is discussing with me, he would be going through papers relating to his work as the President. He is like a multi-processor; each processor doing parallel processing,’’ Father George said, his eyes glittering with pride. It was by mere chance that Fr George, hailing from Trichur in Kerala, came upon the unique opportunity.“Dr V Ramachandran, my ME guide in Anna University, was passing by in the corridor. He called out to me asking if I would like to do PhD in Systems Engineering. I did not particularly like the subject, so I shouted ‘no.’ Then, almost as an afterthought, the Professor called back, ‘Dr. Kalam is guiding in this area, you know.’ I ran back and said I would be interested.” That was in January 2002. Since then, he has spent 200 hours with Dr Kalam, 50 of them after he became the President. “He wanted me to select a topic which would eventually help people. In fact, it was he, who suggested that I work on mentally challenged children. I have no regrets,’’ said Fr George.According to the student, it’s his teacher’s optimism which keeps him going. “Most teachers don’t undertake this kind of two-way traffic. After telling you his ideas, he would ask your opinion and listen to you as well.”This frequent visitor to Rashtrapati Bhavan is optimistic of completing the research in about a year. But there’s a huge temptation to prolong his doctoral studies as well. It’s not always that one gets to have the President of the country as a guide, that too ‘‘a humble person with a huge brain and a huger heart.’’
